Working with relationships to reduce school bullying.

7th, 14th, 21st, 28th June and 5th, 12th July 2011

Tutors: Prof. Helen Cowie & Dr. Pat Colliety, University of Surrey (United Kingdom)

This module focuses on evidence based methods for working with adult-student and peer-peer relationships to prevent and reduce school bullying. Key themes to be explored in the module include:

  • What is known about the characteristics of those who are bullied
  • What is known about the characteristics of those who bully and the risk factors involved
  • Repairing the damage: methods for supporting young people who are bullied
  • Working directly with bullies to change their behaviour
  • The role of the bystander: how peer support can be integrated into the school
  • Using cooperative learning methods to foster positive relationships in the classroom

The module will be delivered using a combination of on-line resources and 6 seminars in the evening using the virtual world, Second Life. The seminars will take place on the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th June and 5th, 12th July 2011.

The module is validated by the University of Surrey can be taken at either level 3 (degree level) or level 4 (Master’s level). The cost will be £590. For further details please contact Pat Colliety (p.colliety@surrey.ac.uk).
